Training and events

The audiovisual programme classifiers are trained by the National Audiovisual Institute.

As part of its statutory tasks, the National Audiovisual Institute trains new audiovisual programme classifiers and provides the classifiers with regular refresher training. The National Audiovisual Institute also provides the audiovisual programme classifiers with further training in the form of annual classifier meetings.

You can become an audiovisual programme classifier if

  • you are at least 18 years old
  • you are suited for the task (for example, you do not have any sensory disability preventing you from performing the task)
  • you do not have any convictions for the offences listed in the Act on Audiovisual Programmes (you must present an extract from your criminal records that is no more than six months old)
  • you have successfully completed the classifier training

Criminal liability for acts in office and liability for damages apply to the audiovisual programme classifiers when they perform their duties as classifiers. The audiovisual programme classifiers must perform the classification independently and impartially.

Classifier training and the refresher training comprise subjects concerning the provisions of the Act on Audiovisual Programmes, development of children, classification of audiovisual programmes, classification criteria, and the freedom of speech. The requirements for the classifier training and the refresher training are specified by the National Audiovisual Institute. As part of the refresher training, audiovisual programme classifiers must complete an advance assignment and present a new extract from their criminal records.

The approval for an audiovisual programme classifier is valid for five years at a time. An audiovisual programme classifier can only retain their right to work as a classifier if they take part in the refresher training organised by the National Audiovisual Institute. The refresher training must be completed no earlier than six months before the expiry of the approval (section 13 of the Act on Audiovisual Programmes). The audiovisual programme classification and monitoring system (IKLU) automatically sends each classifier a message six months before their right to work as a classifier expires.

See the price list for the prices of classifier training and refresher training (the list is in Finnish).

You can also take part in the refresher training event if your right to work as a classifier has expired because you have skipped previous refresher training.

Classifier meetings

The National Audiovisual Institute arranges a classifier meeting for approved classifiers each year. The focus at the event is on topical issues concerning age limit classification.

The next classifier meeting will be held on 23 May 2024.

You can participate online or at KAVI’s new theater Bio Valentin, Kaikukatu 2 C, 6th floor. The theater has a capacity of 40 people, seats will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Registration closes on 10.5.
